Who knew karaoke singing could land you an artist career?
I am going to be interviewing Tommy DeCarlo the new lead singer for the rock band Boston. He was discovered singing Boston songs in a Karaoke bar. How cool is that and it just proves that if you have talent, you can be found anywhere. He is in his 40s and has never sung with a band before he did a benefit woth the band a few months back. Great story for your students.
You never know where you get “discovered”. I suggest we just do excellent work, wherever we are and whatever the circumstances. I sing just as well for demos as I do for masters, and teach my novices with as much enthusiasm as my recording artists. I think this helps us all develop reputations of integrity, and in the end, we are also much more satisfied with our lives.
So…. sing your hearts out and have some fun and make somebody feel something; you never know who might be listening!

Nice story, but why wasn’t Fran Cosmo, Brad Delp’s former singing partner, invited back to BOSTON ?
Fran is a experienced professional singer & Tom Scholz chooses a fan who sings karaoke ? Something wrong with this picture.

Steinway21- you know what, you’ve hit on a tender spot with me. It does irk me when people less talented are chosen for gigs, overlooking professional, experienced singers. It happens to me all the time. But I’ve also learned that sometimes truly great talent can be found in very ordinary places- like Karaoke bars. I don’t know the particulars as to Boston’s decisions. I’m out of the loop there, but I did think this was an interesting story about possibilities that wait through odd windows. For me, it illustrates the importance of showing up and doing the best you can with what you’ve got, trusting that, somehow and in some way, it matters. Thanks very much for your comment! Please keep in touch.
