Audrey, I'm so sorry about your husband's passing. That has to be very difficult to adjust to. Grief has it's own timetable, and if you need help processing that, by all means seek out some good counselling. Your vocal issues from the past can be exacerbated by the crying you are doing. Speaking and singing with better vocal technique can help you not put your poor vocal cords through too much stress. You can watch some of my youtube vocal lessons, and/or reach out for a vocal lesson from me if you'd like more personalized vocal help. Wishing you joy today. To balance your sadness, look for the diamonds... there's always at least one.

Hey there, thank you so much for your thoughts here. Just so you know crying should not permanently affect your voice after you stop crying for a couple of days. If in doubt check it out... do go to a doctor to rule out anything serious about your continuing vocal issues. Then if you get cleared to work on your voice, consider a lesson with me for even half an hour. Or look at my youtube videos, an experiment with some of the exercises.I give you there. It may be that you developed some bad technical habits from crying that you can change to get your voice back. Hopefully, life would be a lot kinder to you now.

My comment is just to back this article up , my husband suddenly died in 2020 , I was working from home for a year and half as I was totally alone I used to cry all the time , something I never did when my parents died when I was in my late teens for my Dad and my mid twenties for my Mam as it used to affect my work the
next day as I felt terrible and believe it or not I felt that at that time because of that, that crying was a luxury. Anyhow I think the crying for my husband gave me a permanent croaky voice when I speak it tires me controlling it and can make me feel breathless and when talking on the phone at work people ask me how old I am or am I well , it may be something more sinister as I have never been to the doctors about it as other than that I am never ill.

Hello EC; I'm sorry you're having these frustrating vocal issues! I can well imagine you're scared as you start school for voice. I work successfully with lots of people who need help smoothing out certain glitchy places in their vocal range and would love to help you. I'm going to email you directly... Hope to speak with you soon.

Hi, two things.

First of all, I've had tons of vocal issues this year. I lose my voice easily when singing and it puzzles my vocal coaches, but I know I just have huge amounts of tension. I always do singing exercises aimed at people with MTD (straw, etc etc). I had to start speech therapy recently because my talking voice became so difficult. I have to push words out sometimes. I got a scope in January and was clear but I'm doing another one this month, per my therapist's recommendation.

I had to push through two horrible, atypical bouts of laryngitis last month and I'm afraid I've done some damage. I was downing Tylenol and Ibuprofen both times. Now, there's a certain part of my range which feels raw and tender and buzzy and sensitive. I'm afraid something is wrong.

I'm about to start school for voice and I am absolutely petrified I won't be able to go. I'm getting a scope this month but I'm just wondering if anyone knows what that means when a certain note or two feels raw?

Hello Anonymous... first of all, I'm so sorry you've had to go through a very difficult time, and I hope you've found some peace and comfort. Secondly, about your voice: Please understand I'm not a doctor, but I do know that crying stresses and swells the tissues in and around your vocal apparatus. Unless you experience some puzzling issues after time goes by, I'd say just notice how your voice feels when you use it. If it hurts, don't do it. If it's just glitchy or pitchy, then I'd feel safe recommending you start working it out again. Just don't injure it by pushing your singing or speaking voice into discomfort. And if you need help with some targetted and careful vocal exercise to strengthen your voice without straining it, hit me up for a half hour or full hour vocal lesson. I'm wishing you the very best, and healing in all realms.

In January some difficult news resulted in almost daily crying and stress. My voice was greatly affected which, as a singer, is concerning. Approximately how long should I rest my voice to regain the range and quality I had before?

Natalia; first of all I hope the situation that had you crying so hard has been resolved and that you have found peace with it Secondly, yes, it would be normal that your voice is still not back to normal after being pushed so hard with crying and screaming. Give your voice some time to heal before trying to use it a lot. The tissues are swollen and inflamed, and just like a sprained muscle you can really do some damage if you ask it to work too soon. Take care.

Hi, i know this is an old post and sorry to bother you but I was crying yesterday for about an hour or more and also screaming while crying. Today my voice sounds a bit deeper and its hard to get my voice to reach its usual peeks, even just for talking, it feels like theres a lump in my throat or something. Is this normal? and if so, how long does this last?
