Hello from Turkey.
Sorry for my english. I had vocal problems since I was a small child. 13 years ago I had nodules got removed but no improvment at all. I become PE teacher, I work with volleyball teams and yelled. This June I had different vocal cord surgery. Surgeon said you have fibrosis tissue, some scar tissue from ols surgery. Its been 6 weeks and i am still hoarse and cant speak without pain. It makes me depressed because schools are gonna open in a month. I asked for vocal therapy but he said no need. I am desperate how can I support my heailg process. I miss my old hoarse voice believe this new voice after surgery is worst :( but surgeon says it will heal, i have no hope, so depressed. Also I have 18 month old son, i cant speaj with him, cant read to him so sad

Linda; there are many reasons your voice is still experiencing limitation. With the all clear diagnosis on physical damage, what I would really recommend is an online vocal lesson with me, to personalize the instruction and determine the next steps you particularly need to get your voice back. Even one lesson should help, and we can record some vocal exercises so you can practice on your own. If you're interested, please contact me through my website and I'll email you back some information. https://www.judyrodman.com/contact.htm

Hi Judy! Thank you so much for this article. 5 years ago I became ill (nothing to do with neck/voice/throat) and a combination of the meds, stress and additional seizure activity caused me to lose my ability to converse for more than 20 minutes at a time before resting. Singing was out of the question. I had lost all ability to sing. This was the case for a couple of years. Eventually I was able to start singing a little. I was diagnosed with dysphonia by a laryngologyst, but he said he could find no physical damage to keep me from recovering my voice. I did get some help at the laryngology center, but that only took me so far. I have been working on recovering further since, and I have now recovered most of my range, but have lost significant power in my voice and do not have the endurance to sing through even a few songs. Do you have any thoughts on the next steps?

Judy-Thank you so much for your response and advice. Fortunately, it does not hurt when I sing or speak and I can go quite a while singing with no pain. I also do not chronically smoke, it is more cyclical where it's maybe three months on and then months off, but then I'll return to it for another few months. But chronic or on and off-it still is not good for my body and voice period. But if I value my voice enough, which I do, I've got to leave it for good. I just can't hit those Mariah Carey notes as cleanly as I used to before I got sick lol :) I will seek a laryngologist to see what is going on. Thanks so much!
Jamie

Jamie; I'm so sorry about your trouble. Yes, smoking can really murder the voice as well other body parts, and it's well worth the ordeal you go through to quit. As for your current vocal issues, you really need to see a doctor - a laryngologist - who can do a laryngoscopy examination of your vocal cords to see what's going on. You may well have some vocal damage. But I've seen many cases of damage including polyps, nodules, vocal cord paralysis, muscle tension dysphonia and other damage reverse itself with time, good information, and wise re-training of vocal technique. Here's what you can be sure of... if it hurts your throat to sing or speak, don't do it. Get some help to start using your voice properly. I offer free help on this blog and podcast, economical training on disc and of course vocal lessons. Even taking a 1/2 hour can help you on your way. Good luck!

Hi Judy
Around December 5th 2018 I got a severe case of laryngitis and it was my first time getting it. I had an upper respiratory infection that lasted for about one month- the worst sickness I've ever had. I will be open and honest with you and all viewers, it was due to heavy smoking straight to the throat (it was not nicotine) and I ignored the warning signs. Of course, for a singer (leisure), it was and is not the wisest decision to make and I surely have sadly paid the price. I got my voice back, however, I can no longer twang or yodel back and forth between my chest/head voice. I sound like a choo choo train where multiple notes are coming out, almost like a 3 note harmony. I don't know the correct terms, but it's when I "whisper" sing and it sounds damaged. It's been 8 months and that part of my voice is still not healed and I am very scared. Is that part of my voice gone forever?..does this sounds permanently damaged? Help :(
Jamie, 29yr
