If you really want to protect yourself, the best method is to register your works with the copyright office. As you said, you can register many songs at once as a compilation.

If you haven't yet gotten a cut, no problem… still signup and then register your songs with them. Then they will keep track of any future cuts that create royalties.

You register your songs online after you are signed up. Any songs you own part or all of can be registered under your account with your chosen PRO (performance rights organization).

Is it a good idea to sign up in advance of needing someone to keep track of royalties, or is that unnecessary?
