Hi Diane... yes, if you're writing songs which you hope will give you performance rights royalties income, you should sign up with a performance rights organization like BMI, ASCAP, SESAC (those are the US 3) which can collect those royalties for you.

If you haven't yet gotten a cut, no problem... still signup and then register your songs with them. Then they will keep track of any future cuts that create royalties.

You register your songs online after you are signed up. Any songs you own part or all of can be registered under your account with your chosen PRO (performance rights organization).

Judy,I have a question about the groups like BMI-- if you write a song and aren't signed up with any group, can you sign up at any time and still have any songs you've written in the past be eligible for royalties? Is it a good idea to sign up in advance of needing someone to keep track of royalties, or is that unnecessary?
