No dairy, ricemilk, or otherwise for me. It makes the vocal cords coated. And does not allow the voice lilt or pingües on those high notes. Plus nuestro of any kind down the throat sounds like a recipe for scratching. The citrus in the orange would completely dry my vocal cards. But to all of you who can get away with it before a performance, go for it!

If dairy products don't cause too much phlegm on your vocal cords, yes. I used to eat ice cream between sets when I was in a cover band when I was young. It made my throat feel good. I couldn't do it now without gunking up my voice. Just notice how it affects you.

As to how long you'll retain thick mucous, it depends on your own constitution and the type and amounts of foods you eat. Best to keep it simple and clean. Some can get by with foods others can't. Try keeping a food journal on non-performance days. Try singing after you eat and note how your voice feels.

Can you eat meatloaf and/or mashed potatoes before you sing? How many hours does it take to wait (like, will the mucous problem wear off in like...2 hours?)

Of course this post covers types of foods... but everyone is unique. Eat the kinds of foods that don't make your voice feel phlegmy. The time to experiment is before the day of performance, but just read this post again and then make your best guess. Unless you're allergic to pineapple, do try that diluted pineapple juice - take it with you to sip on while you're on stage. Best wishes for a great performance!

It depends on what's in it and if your stomach can handle it well. You do need protein and beef or turkey chili can provide that plus some good fiber. Two other things to consider: Does it give or take your energy? Does it add to phlegm in your throat? Use common sense, and if in doubt about how your digestive system handles a food or drink, save it to test before rehearsal, not performance.

Panda girl... well really it depends. Not sure what you mean by lemon tea but lemon water is good if you need de-gunking, cinnamon apple spice for soothing warmth to your throat tissues and chamomile could possibly be relaxing if you are stressed. I really prefer the diluted pineapple juice, but you shouldn't try anything for the first time right before performance. Try it at rehearsal instead.
