Catriona, you are exactly the kind of vocalist I wrote this post for. I'm glad you've realized something is wrong. Vocal exercises absolutely should NOT make your voice feel hoarse, dry or less flexible! Please take to heart what I've said here in this post. My best advice for you is either 1. don't DO vocal exercises because you're not doing the right ones correctly, or 2. get a vocal lesson from a teacher who can help you. Yes, a good teacher can be expensive (my lessons are $125 hr or $65 for 1/2 hr) but even one lesson from a good, intuitive teacher should help you a lot. If you'd like to contact me, email me at judy@judyrodman.com. I wish you the very best in figuring out your best solution.

I often find without warmups my range is still good and I can do songs easiest. I do want to follow doing warmups before singing however I always feel like my voice becomes dry and less flexible maybe even a little hoarse this doesn’t always happen though only sometimes. I haven’t found a warmup that works I’ve been trying lip trills, sirens mostly and alongside humming warmups and yawning and lengthening jaw. However in the past singing lessons have been expensive and haven’t worked well for me as it leaves me more struggling than before the lesson.

Judy, I will reschedule a lesson with you when I get a couple of weeks of regularly preparing for the visit so you can see how your exercises are helping. I am recording reading things both the Psalms and poetry I am writing. Tomorrow night I will sing "The Impossible Dream" at New Years Party so I am warming up and going through some of the exercises. Do you think it is possible I could do a CD of favorite songs for the family for Christmas 2015? Charlotte's book is out and she plans to give you one. "A Transplanted Soul." I think it is absolutely wonderful. I, also, cannot wait to hear the CD you and John have completed. I love your work and the blessed gift you are to all the ones who are priviledged to work with you. We love you. Terry and Charlotte

Greentub... first of all, congratulations on your dedication to your voice! I'd say ask yourself the questions in the post. How does your voice feel? Would you like to take your vocal ability farther or are you satisfied where you are? But no matter what, I WOULD revisit the way you're doing the exercises you have. Make sure you haven't gotten lazy with form. Thanks for writing!
